Backchannel Tips: Explore the #DevLearn Conference App

Most conferences now use dedicated smart phone applications for the events. It’s a great idea that was built upon a simple concept: What if we could take all the information about the conference that we provide in printed form – including the schedule and session descriptions – and make it available on demand on a smart phone?

It was a brilliant idea, and one that definitely added value to attending a conference. The eLearning Guild events were the some of the first conferences to use such applications. That innovation continues in 2012 as DevLearn introduces a new app for this year’s conference, one that includes exciting features that make the app less of a reference tool and more a part of the conference experience.

The app includes an interactive program guide and the ability to set your own agenda. But this year’s DevLearn Conference app does so much more. There are a multitude of sharing options integrated into the app, including social media services Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube. There’s also a gallery through which attendees can take and submit photos. Best of all, there’s now an integrated attendee roster and messaging service. The app makes it easier than ever to make and build connections with your peers at DevLearn.

The app is an extension of the DevLearn conference experience, and is therefore designed for conference attendees. While there is functionality in the app that is of great use to non-attendees following the backchannel, some of the functions, like the messaging and game, require a login which is only available to conference attendees.

To log into the app, you will use the your email address as your login ID, and ‘devlearn’ (in all lower case letters) as the password. The email address that you should use to log in is the email address you used to register for the conference.

Play the DevLearn 2012 Mobile App Game

If you’re attending the DevLearn Conference in person, be sure to check out the Mobile App Game. You access it via the GAME icon. As this game is only for conference attendees, you will need to log into the app to play the game.

The game runs Wednesday through Friday, and it’s easy to play along. You earn points just by using the app, such as messaging other attendees, tweeting, or posting photos.

There is also a “Check In” option to gain points. Check-in codes will appear all around the conference: on slides, signs, and even people! If you see a code, check in and earn points.

Three prizes will be awarded each day to the top point earners. Winners will be announced via the app and at the DevLearn registration desk.

The game is just another example of The eLearning Guild finding ways to enhance your conference experience. If you haven’t already downloaded the app, you can find links to the iOS and Android apps here.
